Upper New Cortez Small Irrigation Project (SIP) Completed and Turned Over Ahead of Schedule

November 27, 2021

New Cortez, New Corella - The Matin-ao New Cortez Farmer Irrigators Association (MANECOFIA), Inc. received the newly completed Upper New Cortez SIP in a ceremonial turnover on November 18, 2021.

Now a functioning system, it will serve an additional 28 hectares of service area in New Cortez, New Corella, Davao del Norte which is a source of livelihood to 58 farmers.

NIA XI Regional Manager Jimmy L. Apostol was pleased to note in his speech that the project was completed in about 5 months, or less than half the time that it was programmed. As may be recalled, the groundbreaking of Upper New Cortez SIP took place on June 16, 2021 and project implementation was set for 360 days.

The Php 10Million project involved a construction of a gravity-type diversion dam, its appurtenances and access roads. Davao del Norte Irrigation Management Office (IMO) Division Manager Larry C. Franada presented the Project Profile at the turnover which included two check structures.  The main canal is 1.73 km long, the laterals run a length of 0.37 km, canal lining stretches up to 0.14 km, and HDPE pipes have a total length of 1.59 km.  The FMR Construction and Supplies undertook all the works.

MANECOFIA Inc. President Anecito Mindoro in his acceptance expressed how glad they are for the project in their community. He described how laborious it had always been for them to let the water in to their farms.

Apostol assured in his speech that NIA will help the IAs become independent and will learn to monitor and manage the irrigation system.

In reference to the upcoming devolution of Communal Irrigation Systems (CIS) which will start to take effect next year, he said, "I-turnover mo sa LGU nga kinahanglan preparado namo,"[You will be turned over to the LGU and you should be prepared when this happens."]
