Built in 1953 and operational by 1956, the dam has suffered wear and tear throughout its existence, and damages to its structure have also called for its rehabilitation in the previous years.
Between 2019 and 2020, extreme weather conditions and natural calamities had compromised the integrity of the main dam and other structures. Specifically, two magnitude 6.3 and 6.9 earthquakes occurred, and successive heavy downpour and flash floods, and decades of quarrying activities near the dam site took its toll on Padada RIS dam leaving it severely damaged and in critical state, potentially affecting the livelihood of farmers who are dependent on its irrigation waters.
After securing funds from the Central Office, the NIA Region XI through the Davao del Sur IMO undertook major repair and rehabilitation for the system with a total amount of Php 202,813,795.58 Million. Major works included foundation treatment, downstream apron extension, upstream section modification; and repair and rehabilitation of sluiceway/vertical wall, lattice walls (core walls and tie walls), downstream apron, damaged spillway at the right side, inclined walls, and ogee. Canalization was also included in the laterals.
